Esterman, Robert; Adeomir, Abhilash; Owaisi, Nabil; and Uweke, F. A. (2000) A Comprehensive Review of Clomid, Male, and Female Fertility in North Nigeria and Its Impact on Lifestyle and Health
ObjectiveClomid is the first and only treatment for male infertility (; ). It is a medication that was first introduced in 1967 and has been available since then for nearly 40 years. Clomid has been used since 1995 and is the only FDA-approved fertility drug approved to treat infertility in North Nigeria. Clomid is an oral medication and has been widely used for more than 10 years in Nigeria.
MethodologyA review of the data on treatment outcomes of Clomid has been conducted in the Nigerian Fertility and Infertility Center (Niti-Fertility) of Niti-Fertility of Niti-Fertility.
ResultsThe overall mean age of the patients was 45.2 (SD = 7.6) years. The most common symptoms were decreased body temperature, vaginal dryness, and difficulty swallowing. In addition, Clomid reduced the number of sperm retrieved (i.e., less than 50%) from 50% to 27%. There was no significant difference in the percentage of retrieved sperm in each age group. The mean age of infertility was 26.7 (SD = 6.2) years. The most common cause of infertility was decreased body temperature. In addition, Clomid decreased the number of sperm in each age group. Overall, there were 3.7 patients who experienced infertility.
ConclusionsClomid has a positive impact on reproductive health and treatment outcomes in Nigeria. The majority of infertility cases are attributed to infertility itself and are reversible with continued use of Clomid. The use of Clomid for male infertility is limited due to its limited availability and its lack of market share in the market.
